Cleaning & Drying

Please Note: you should have been trained at your initial ProvidaCare set-up meeting on cleaning your equipment. Here are some important tips to remember:

When cleaning your CPAP equipment, only use a mild, non-lotion detergent. Do not use soap or strong dish washing detergents such as Dawn or Joy. Avoid detergents that use strong perfumes or dyes. We recommend using a dishwashing detergent like Ivory liquid soap or baby shampoo for cleaning your equipment.

When drying, always hang tubing away from direct sunlight, as this will cause the tubing to become yellow, brittle and crack over time. DO NOT attach the wet tubing to your CPAP unit to blow-dry it. The moisture from the tubing can drain back into your machine. Moisture in your unit can cause sudden pressure increases or can a short circuit.

Schedule

We recommend cleaning your mask and humidifier daily. Clean non-disposable filters and hose weekly. Rinse and dry your headgear as needed.

Cleaning Steps for CPAP mask:

  • Remove the headgear from the mask.
  • Disassemble your mask, paying close attention to the cushion that rests against your face when the mask is on. This is the most important component to clean as it contains facial oils.
  • Using a cloth slightly dampened with water and dish detergent, wash each component.
  • Rinse thoroughly.
  • Allow to air dry out of direct sunlight.
  • Make sure the mask is thoroughly dry before reassembling it.

Cleaning Steps for humidifier:

  1. Empty any remaining water after each use.
  2. Wash your hands.
  3. Immerse the humidifier tub (not the whole unit) in warm, soapy water.
  4. Fill the humidifier tub with soapy water and shake the humidifier vigorously.
  5. Rinse with clean water and allow to air dry.

Other Tips:

Don’t use alcohol-based products to clean your mask
Don’t use any harsh household cleaning solutions such as bleach on your CPAP equipment.
Do change your disposable filter frequently.
Don’t put headgear in the washer or dryer.
